As many of you know, I am a pug lover and pug and pet gift business owner. I am amazed at the number of dogs I encounter - pugs and all breeds - that are not neutered or spayed. What's up with this? The three main reasons I hear for not neutering or spaying are:
1. I can't afford it
2. If I neuter my male dog, he won't be manly anymore.
3. I didn't think anything could happen.
Okay, where to begin:
Neutering and spaying does not have to be expensive, folks! Many Humane Society branches and other shelters will spay and neuter at a lower cost. Not all veterinarians charge a huge fee to spay and neuter. In the final analysis, you can shop around and prevent an unwanted litter of puppies or kitties.
Regarding reason number 2, may I just say - a bigger load of rubbish I have never heard! This is purely a myth and one of huge proportions. Whether this is some leftover stereotypical propaganda of the 50s or what, I don't know. Trust me, your male dog will be happier and there is nothing manly about a male dog running upstreet and down alley impregnating every female within a 5 mile radius. Think about how many of those puppies will wind up in shelters and possibly be put down. How cruel is that?
Reason number 3 - all it takes is one time. If your female is not spayed and there's even one un-neutered male in the area, he'll find a way to make a date and she will find a way to rendezvous. You can't fight nature - and unless you are a responsible and professional breeder, you are actually being cruel to your pet. Even if you keep close watch on your dog or cat, you allow them to go through the heat cycle. It's analogous to being all dressed up and no place to go.
I urge every dog and cat owner out there to please, please neuter and spay your pets. If you need help finding a facility to do this at low cost, please email or call (913) 403-8009) me and I will be glad to help research your area.

Victor Hugo's mom, Angela Nabuco, tells us his story:
Back in 2001, we imported Am Ch Bowtie´s Oh No Mr Bill Live! from Pat Hicks of North Carolina and Bill´s first litter here was with our beloved Nabuco´s Betty Boop, the best girl in our kennel!
Unfortunately Betty passed away in the c-section. It was a nightmare! I could not believe it was happening!! Victor was the only boy among the 3 puppies born.
Our dear bitch Vivi, took care of the puppies for us. Vivi was still pregnant, but nursed Victor and her sisters.
Since the beginning Victor was a stunning puppy and had a special love for me. We have many pugs at home, and most of them belong to all people in the house. But Victor belongs to me, or may be I belong to him!
He has been to shows as a junior ( he is junior champion ) , but we stopped going to shows since 2002. Victor knows he is special for many ways! He is a wonderful stud dog, producing so many champions in his 6 years, among them the pug #2 in Brasil in 2007 and Multi BIS Brasilian Ch, Uruguai Ch Nabuco´s Ana Livia. Another daughter of Victor who made a lot of success is Multi BIS Nabuco´s Tequila, the puppy #1 in Mexico in 2007.
Victor is the boss in our house for all the pugs. His pictures can tell about his personality, and how spoiled he is!!! He knows how important he is for me, the best souvenir Betty Boop could leave to us before passing the rainbow bridge. He is my beloved boy!!!
A note from PugSpeak: Angela, thank you for sharing Victor's story. We are so happy to have this dear pug boy as PugSpeak's March Pug of the Month!

This Xmas I got a puppy. I was bewildered, thunderstruck and totally astonished when a four month old Pug appeared in his enchanting puglette way from around the back of my son’s couch with a big red bow tied around his neck. When I came to my senses, it was love at first sight. I was immediately willing to perform the imminent puppy duties.
Since I was in San Diego for Xmas it only seemed appropriate to name the little guy Diego. It was a name that perfectly fit him. He was quite socialized with the large dogs at my son’s home, having lived there for 5 weeks prior to Xmas. Diego and their cat were fast friends. We traveled home to the Monterey Bay area and Diego proved to be a wonderful traveler. Arriving home, Diego couldn’t comprehend why Princess, my cat didn’t just love to romp with him.
The cooler climate of the Monterey Bay dictates that he has warm clothing. For the “no neck” husky shouldered pug, I found there was little available that fit the boy. This launched the beginnings of a new business catering to couture puggie threads: PETITAMICOUTURE.COM.
Diego seems to have a built in routing system. We travel everywhere together and if we don’t make the appropriate turns to visit some of his favorite people, he begins to whine and whimper. He has chosen to travel on the center console of my Xterra, so a lead line between the seats attached to a harness keeps him safe while he tends to his navigation duties. When the road is long he rests his head on my shoulder and catches a little snooze. All the while snorting and snoring in my right ear.
Being bright and eager to please Diego is easy to train and quick to learn. One of his favorite non-instructed actions was to bring all his stuft toys and dump them in the open toilet while I was taking a shower. Whatever makes this idea pop into a puggie head? No matter, everyone went into the drink.
When I sit at the computer, he methodically brings all his toys to my feet. Then I move to the sewing table and one by one he drops all the toys again where they are again underfoot. There’s a lot of moving toys about in this household.
A healthy and bright 9 month old, he thrives on love and attention. Now Diego believes he’s 90 lbs and prefers to play with the Big Dogs at the doggie park. The Aptos Beach is a regular on our walk. Diego will retrieve his favorite hooded fleece cheetah sweatshirt when he knows it’s time to head out the door. There is a lot of dog in this little pup; Diego’s the BOMB!

Normally we feature a pug who is not related to the PugSpeak household, but we decided to make an exception. C.K. Dexter Haven, our first born pug, is celebrating his 8th birthday on May 17. This is Dexter's month and we want to tell our readers a little about him.
From that day and three more pugs later, Dexter is still every bit the patriarch of the PugSpeak pugs. Dexter is also the co-founder of PugSpeak, LLC and has provided much of the inspiration behind the pug cards, pug calendars, and other pug gifts that have sold worldwide. Between keeping an eye out on his brothers and helping us with the company, Dexter is indeed a busy man.
As many of you already know, Dexter has had serious health issues the last few months and we've been amazed at his fortitude and bravery. And most importantly, his propensity to live life to the fullest. His attitude is positive and his will is strong and he has taught us all something about grace under fire. We are proud to make Dexter our Pug of the Month. We love you, Dexter. Happy Birthday!
For Dexter's personal stats, please refer to Meet Dexter.
